THIS IS A FULL TIME SEASONAL POSITION
The primary responsibility of the Chief Mate is to fill out the watch standing requirements of the bridge and, secondarily, to stand gangway security watch while in port. The Chief Mate is also responsible for managing the deckhand staff that keep up the exterior and certain interiors of the vessel.
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY INCLUDE:
Navigation/bridge watch: Operate vessel during assigned watches to the highest professional and standards, with the safety of passengers and vessel being paramount. Monitor communication equipment and keep logs and records as required by U.S. Coast Guard and Cruise West. Make use of all bridge tools and personnel, alerting the Captain as needed or as per orders. When in port will maintain a gangway security watch.
Medical Officer: The Chief Mate is the Company designated Medical Officer. The Medical Officer is responsible for the supervisory management of the ship’s medical locker and the reordering of medical supplies; and ensuring that there is always a proper and currently certified medical response team aboard the ship on all cruises. The Medical Officer will in most cases be one of the vessel’s principal responders and will in any case be the medical management supervisor.
Supervision of deck staff: Assign deck work lists. Every day provide a priority list of what needs to be done. Supervise deck scheduling as for deckhands regarding what watch they will be on. Also responsible for employee relations counseling as needed. Train the new deckhand staff as they come on board. Also instruct new deckhands in various procedures on how to maintain the boat and related safety procedures which apply to boat maintenance and docking procedures.
Requisition of bridge and deck supplies: Maintain constant communication with the deckhand staff, plus direct oversight, to know what is in supplies inventory. Plan ahead and maintain constant communication with the Seattle office to ensure supplies are available and are within budget.
Administration: Maintain CSMP’s (Current Ship Maintenance Project) list of items that need to be addressed on the boat during the off-season. Reply to safety or office memorandums. Write up various work lists for crewmembers. Print out tides and currents that are coming up as part of itinerary planning of future cruise routes. Assign emergency station bills to the entire crew.
Emergency situations: Chief Mate is usually the scene leader in charge at the site of the emergency. In addition, assist the Second Mate in weekly safety inspections or testing of equipment.
