DECK AND ENGINEERING WATCH OFFICER/INSTRUCTORS
POSITIONS (10) WILL REMAIN OPEN UNTIL FILLED
We are seek applicants for temporary positions to serve as Watch Officers/Instructors for the 2010 annual training cruise. The 2nd Cruise is June 29, 2010-August 29, 2010.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The engineering position will be responsible for standing watches, and instructing students. Other duties will include drills, handling emergency repairs, in port watches, preparing and conducting lectures for assigned courses.
The deck position will be responsible for standing watches, and instructing students. Other duties will include vessel traffic, weather logging, and bridge-to-bridge communications, plotting, emergency drills, in port watches, and navigation control.
LOCATION: a specialized campus of the California State University (CSU), offers undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering Technology (ABET/TEC accredited), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Transportation, Business Administration and Global Studies & Maritime Affairs. The campus is located in Vallejo, 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.
CRUISE PERIOD: The entire operation of the Training Ship GOLDEN BEAR is under management by students, with faculty-licensed officers acting in an advisory capacity. First-year students perform elementary tasks, while third-year students perform all the duties of ship’s officers - from loading the ship’s cargo of provisions and lighting of the plant, to navigating and providing power for the ship. Grades are assigned by faculty members based on actual performance, professionalism and aptitude for life at sea as a licensed officer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Engine Positions:
• Unlimited U.S. Coast Guard motor license
• Familiar with modern ship technology
• 95 STCW endorsement
Deck Positions:
• Unlimited U.S. Coast Guard Deck license with current radar/ARPA endorsement
• Familiar with modern ship technology, especially electronic navigation and communication
• 95 STCW endorsement including GMDSS
